I took the role of a peasant archer and searched for connections between my modern day bow hunting experiences and the tactics of a levy archer in the early medieval period.

The advantages of attacking at a distance with weapons that require little training seem comparable to advantages granted by being equipped and trained for more martial arms and armor. These advantages evaporate, however, when archers and skirmishers are not protected behind their lines or by geography on the battlefield.
