- Description
- Full-scale modern sculpture representing the Anglo-Saxon ship discovered in Mound 1 at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk. Installed in 2018, the 27-metre-long sculpture reproduces the skeletal form of the vessel and indicates the position of the burial chamber. The original early seventh-century ship was placed beneath a burial mound and contained a rich assemblage of grave goods. Although Sutton Hoo is Anglo-Saxon rather than Viking, there are many connections between the ship burial and the wider Scandinavian world, including the famous Sutton Hoo helmet. Its face-mask may contain an allusion to Woden, the Anglo-Saxon counterpart of the Norse god Óðinn.
